The Forge Retail Park awarded for safer and accessible parking facilities

The Forge Retail Park in Telford successfully achieved the Park Mark award for safety and acknowledged for its excellent accessibility standards for disabled users with the Disabled Parking Accreditation (DPA).
Jayden Walton, Contracts Manager at Telford Forge Retail Park and Wrekin Retail Park said: “All AEJ members of staff strive towards making both retail parks a nice, safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and they are delighted with these awards.
“We have 1,343 car parking spaces of which 56 are for disabled parking at Telford Forge and 670 car parking spaces of which 32 are disabled at The Wrekin Retail Park. Both parks attract customers from neighbouring towns with glowing reviews. It is important for us to continue to maintain these high standards for our customers.”
The site has held Park Mark, the police crime prevention award for 10 years, which British Parking Association area manager, Michael Gardner said had been due to their commitment and hard work in upholding the strict criteria the scheme requires.
“This award is well deserved and is testament to the hard work and professionalism of the car park team at The Forge Retail Park”, Michael Gardner said.
“I am also delighted that The Forge has achieved the Disabled Parking Accreditation. Both awards highlight the continued commitment to provide a high standard of car parking facilities.
“Both awards can be found on designated websites. The DPA website caters purely for accessible parking where people can search for a car park with the accreditation. It’s great that disabled motorists’ needs are recognised and that they can find suitable parking before they leave home.”
Disabled Motoring UK’s report into disabled parking facilities across the UK showed that many car parks failed to make provision for disabled drivers.
Graham Footer, DMUK Chief Executive said: “Disabled Motoring UK is really pleased that The Forge has joined the growing number shopping centres accredited with the DPA. It indicates that there is a positive response from the retail industry that it is beneficial to be part of nationally recognised accreditation and be able to promote this facility to their communities as accessible.”
A Park Mark is awarded to parking facilities that pass a rigorous risk assessment conducted by the police and the British Parking Association. The assessments include management and maintenance of the facility, ensuring that there are appropriate levels of surveillance, lighting, signage and cleanliness. These criteria are known to reduce the opportunity for crime and create a safer environment for the motorist and their vehicle.
Car parks with the Park Mark award can use signage featuring the distinctive Park Mark tick, so that drivers know exactly where to go for safer parking. Early adopters of the scheme saw a dramatic drop in vehicle-related crime of over 80% showing that the initiative really does make a difference.
Personal safety and location have been cited as joint priorities when choosing where to park. There are currently 5000 car parks with the Park Mark award throughout the UK which can be found on a designated website www.parkmark.co.uk
